Honinji Pond: Where Jeju's Founding Legend Was Married Off

Five minutes by car from Seongsan Ilchulbong, tucked into the back lanes of Onpyeong where tour buses never stop, there is a small pond with a large story attached. Jeju's founding myth says the island's three ancestral demigods married three princesses from across the sea right here, at Honinji. It is never crowded, yet half of Jeju's creation legend lives in this village, and in early summer the pond is ringed with hydrangeas. Because it is a walk from the house, this is the first outing we suggest to anyone staying in Onpyeong.
The legend: three princesses, three demigods
The story begins at Samseonghyeol in Jeju City, where three demigods — Go, Yang and Bu — are said to have risen out of the ground. They lived by hunting until, one day, a wooden chest washed ashore on the Onpyeong coast. Inside were three princesses of the kingdom of Byeongnang, dressed in blue, along with seeds of the five grains and a calf and a foal. The demigods bathed in this pond, married the princesses, and spent their wedding night in a cave nearby. Then they sowed the seeds and raised the animals, and that, the legend says, is how farming came to Jeju.
It is myth, not history, so there is nothing to verify. But it helps to know that Samseonghyeol and Honinji are two halves of one tale: if you have seen the shrine in Jeju City, Onpyeong is where the story ends. Honinji was designated a Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Monument (No. 17) in 1971.
What to see: the pond, the bridal cave, the shrine
The pond is right past the entrance. It is not large — a slow lap of the path takes ten minutes — but it is beautifully kept. Behind it, on a low rise, is the bridal cave, Sinbanggul. You climb down into a sunken opening and the cave splits into three chambers, which is exactly what the legend of three couples and three bridal rooms would need, and villagers have held it to be that place for generations. The floor is dark and uneven, so wear proper shoes.
The same grounds hold a shrine housing the princesses' memorial tablets and a traditional wedding hall. The hall doubles as an exhibition on old Jeju wedding customs and as a working venue: couples still marry here in the traditional style. If you find guests in hanbok on a weekend, watch from a distance and let the ceremony be.
Hydrangea season: Honinji in May and June
The busiest weeks are late May through June, when hydrangeas bloom in blue, purple and pink along the pond and its paths, and the village holds its Honinji festival. As a free hydrangea spot it draws a fair crowd of photographers on weekend mornings; a weekday morning is calmer. Outside the season the pond and cave are just as they always are, so this is not a place that depends on the calendar.
Hwangnual and Onpyeong Port: the shore where the chest landed
The beach where the legendary chest came ashore is Hwangnual, beside Onpyeong Port. Marks in the black shore rock are pointed out as the princesses' footprints, and the village treats this stretch of coast and the pond as a pair. Onpyeong Port is also where Olle Trail Route 2 ends and Route 3 begins, so following the Olle markers will keep you on the right path. Near the harbour stands a restored dodaet-bul, the stone beacon that once guided fishing boats home — the legend and the working life of a sea village share the same road.
From the house: a half-day Onpyeong loop
Jeju Daily to Honinji is about 1.4 km through village lanes, a little over 20 minutes on foot. Give the grounds 30–40 minutes, then head down to the coast past Hwangnual and Onpyeong Port and back to the house, and you have an unhurried two-hour half-day. An early start keeps it quiet even in hydrangea season. To extend the walk along the Seongsan coast, see our Seongsan coastal walks guide; if you are planning the trip without a car, the car-free Seongsan guide covers the connections.
