East Jeju Without a Car: How Far Can You Get?

Every Jeju guide tells you to rent a car, and for good reason. But if eastern Jeju is your whole trip, you can get further without one than the conventional wisdom suggests. An express bus runs from the airport toward Seongsan, and at Seongsan Port you simply buy a ticket and walk onto the Udo ferry. The catch is that the line between what works and what doesn't is sharp out here — so it pays to know where that line sits before you land.

Airport to Seongsan: the express bus

Express buses in the 101 and 111 families connect Jeju Airport with the Seongsan area. Routes and timetables do get revised, though, so check the latest schedule in a map app before you set out — and treat frequency and journey time as things to verify on the day rather than facts to plan around. Keep your arrival-day itinerary loose.

Traveling with several large suitcases? Pick a departure you don't have to rush for; boarding takes longer than you'd think. And for the last stretch from the bus stop to your accommodation, skip the heroic walk and call a taxi. Once the bags are down, feet, ferries, and the occasional cab will carry the rest of the trip.

Around Seongsan: walking plus taxis

Central Seongsan-ri is genuinely walkable. The Ilchulbong entrance, the restaurant strip, and Seongsan Port all sit within strolling distance of one another, so the skeleton of a day can be built on foot. The trouble is village-to-village travel — Onpyeong to Seongsan-ri, say, is too far to walk. Local branch buses exist, but they may not run often; check the timetable, and when in doubt, just call a taxi.

Taxis here are summoned by phone or by app rather than hailed on the street. Settle on one booking method before you arrive and the whole trip runs smoother.

Udo is made for foot passengers

The car-free traveler's best friend is Udo. Buy a same-day ticket at Seongsan Port, walk aboard, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. Better still, Udo currently restricts incoming rental cars, so arriving without one is the natural state of things. There are exceptions — families with children under six among them — but confirm the details at the dock rather than taking them on faith.

On the island, rent a bicycle or an electric scooter (license requirements vary by vehicle, so ask at the rental shop). The full loop is about 17 km — comfortable in half a day. Ferry logistics, sights, and the famous peanut ice cream are covered in our Udo day-trip guide.

A car-free day, hour by hour

  • Dawn — taxi to the Ilchulbong entrance. The summit is a 20–30 minute stair climb regardless of how you arrived.
  • Morning — walk down to the restaurant strip for breakfast. Within Seongsan-ri, you stay on foot.
  • Midday — stroll to Seongsan Port for half a day on Udo, cycling the island at your own pace.
  • Evening — dinner back in Seongsan-ri, then a short taxi home.

The honest limits — and a compromise

Here is the part most guides skip: public transport in eastern Jeju is sparse. After dinner, bus travel is effectively over for the day. Grocery runs and rainy afternoons push you firmly into taxi territory, and the spontaneous late-night drive to look at stars simply isn't on the menu.

So consider a hybrid. Arrive and depart by bus and taxi, and rent a car for just one day in the middle to widen your radius. For what to do with that day, our two-day East Jeju itinerary is a good template. Either way, base yourself in Seongsan and the car-free days will still hold plenty within reach.
