Most visitors climb Seongsan Ilchulbong, take the photo, and move on. Fair enough — but the best views of the peak are from outside it, along three stretches of coast that happen to be lovely walks in their own right. Seopjikoji is the famous one, a cape that Korean dramas keep returning to. Gwangchigi Beach holds the peak's reflection at sunrise. And Ojo Port is the quiet one almost nobody visits. Each has its hour; here is how to time them.

Gwangchigi Beach — sunrise and the tide

Gwangchigi is Seongsan's sunrise beach. As the light comes up, Ilchulbong appears twice — once on the horizon, once mirrored in the wet sand and tide pools below it. At low tide the scene changes entirely: broad rock shelves emerge, covered in green moss, and the beach becomes a photographer's playground. The tide shifts every day, so check a tide table the evening before rather than trusting your luck.

The beach sits roughly where Olle Trail routes 1 and 2 meet, so it links naturally into a longer shoreline walk. If you want to pair the reflection with the climb itself, our Seongsan Ilchulbong sunrise guide covers the mountain side of the morning. And on days you'd rather not climb at all, Gwangchigi is the sunrise plan on its own.

Seopjikoji — the cape the cameras love

Seopjikoji has served as a backdrop for a long list of Korean dramas and films, and you don't need to have seen any of them to understand why. A grassy headland runs out into the sea, past a red volcanic-cinder hill, ending at a small lighthouse — the whole walk composes itself like a film set. The standard route is simple: park at the entrance and follow the coastal path to the lighthouse and back, which most people do comfortably in about an hour.

  • The Ilchulbong view — the peak stays in sight across the water for most of the walk. This is one of the classic places to photograph it from the outside.
  • Spring canola — in spring the cape turns yellow with canola blossoms, an entirely different scene.
  • The wind — the cape is exposed on all sides and the wind means it. Bring a layer, even in summer.

Ojo Port — the still water

Ojo Port is an inner harbor tucked into the village of Ojo-ri, sheltered enough that the water often sits mirror-flat. Ilchulbong shows up here too, reflected at yet another angle, with a foreground of moored boats instead of crowds. There is no tourist apparatus to speak of — on many days it's just you, a few fishing boats, and the seabirds. The harbor path continues into village lanes lined with black-stone walls, which makes it the right choice for a slow, quiet wander.

Timing it — sunrise here, sunset there

The three sites are close together, but their best light is not. Sunrise belongs to Gwangchigi, no contest. Late afternoon belongs to Seopjikoji and Ojo, when the lowering sun softens the cape's grassland and warms the harbor's surface. If you want to string them into a half day, this order works well: sunrise at Gwangchigi, a mid-morning stroll around Ojo Port and its village lanes, lunch, then Seopjikoji as the light starts to drop. A mix of walking and short drives, and none of it feels rushed.

Getting there from the house

From Onpyeong, Gwangchigi Beach and Ojo Port are about ten minutes by car, and Seopjikoji is not much farther. Olle Trail routes 2 and 3 pass directly through Onpyeong village, so a coastal walk can also begin the moment you step out the door.
