East Jeju in Two Days: A Slow Itinerary from Seongsan
Seongsan · Udo Island · Olle Trail · Local food
Published 2 min read
Eastern Jeju runs slower than the west. The roads narrow, the wind picks up, and resort strips give way to fishing villages and black-stone walls. Two days based in Seongsan is enough to see the area properly — with time left over for an unplanned afternoon, which is rather the point.
Day 1 — Seongsan Ilchulbong and the village
Morning: Seongsan Ilchulbong at sunrise, or as early as you can manage. The climb to the crater rim takes 20–30 minutes on a paved but steep path; arrive before 8 AM and you'll beat the tour buses. Back at the base, haenyeo — Jeju's women divers — sell the morning's catch at a small market from early in the day.
Late morning: Drive or walk toward Onpyeong and the coast. Olle Trail Route 2 ends and Route 3 begins near here; an hour or two along the shoreline takes you between stone walls and open sea with barely a car in sight.
Afternoon: Lunch on Seongsan's main restaurant strip — abalone porridge, grilled fish, fresh seafood. For something quieter, the villages east of Ilchulbong keep small local places with no tourist menus.
Evening: Back at the house. If your stay has a BBQ setup, dinner takes care of itself. The night sky out east is usually dark and clear enough for stars.
Day 2 — Udo Island
Morning: Catch the ferry to Udo Island from Seongsan Port. Crossings take about 15 minutes and run frequently — check the day's schedule at the port. Bring your car across or rent a scooter on the island. The essentials: Udo Peak (우도봉), the peanut ice cream, the coral sand beach at Seobin Baeksa, and the lighthouse on the northeast tip.
A full loop of the island by scooter or car takes one to two hours without stops; with stops, half a day is comfortable. Udo is small and fills up fast in peak season (July–August), so the earlier your ferry, the better.
Afternoon: Ferry back to Seongsan, check out, and carry on to wherever is next — Jeju City is about an hour by car; the south coast, 40–50 minutes.
With a third night, you could swap day two's Udo ferry for a drive north instead — Gimnyeong Sea Wall, the Maze Park area, or Manjanggul Lava Tube, all within 30–40 minutes of Seongsan.
Practical notes
- Rent a car before you arrive — public transport in eastern Jeju is sparse.
- Seongsan Ilchulbong charges admission (check the current rate at the entrance).
- Udo ferry tickets are sold at Seongsan Port on the day; foot passengers don't need to book ahead.
- Most Seongsan restaurants happily take cash but rarely have English menus — a translation app goes a long way.
- The weather out east turns quickly; pack a light layer even in summer.
